Vietnam occupies the eastern and southern part of the Indochinese peninsula in Southeast Asia, with the South China Sea along its entire coast. To the north is China, whilst Laos and Cambodia are to the west. The Mekong River delta lies in the south.

A long and narrow country, Vietnam is about twice the size of Arizona and slightly larger than New Mexico. Vietnam is 9.92 times smaller than India. In comparison with the land mass of other countries, Vietnam ranks #66, whilst the UK ranks #78. When comparing density of population per square kilometre, Vietnam ranks /37 and the UK ranks #39.

The total land area of Vietnam is 329,569 square kilometers (127,247 square miles). It has a long coastline of 3,444 kilometers (2,140 miles). Its 2 major cities are the capital, Hanoi in the north and the economic center, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) in the south. Other major cities are the ancient capital of Hue in central Vietnam, the coastal cities of Danang and Haiphong, and Dalat in the central highlands.

As a developing country, its needs are varied and many countries export to Vietnam and thus, Vietnam is a manufacturing base for many companies in other countries.  Increasingly, companies are finding the low cost of labour in Vietnam is competitive when compared to China.
